News page is back online. I had been having trouble with the Menu, hopefully that is fixed now, so if you find any issues with site navigation, please let me know. Otherwise, the site is running smoothly, lots of interesting uploads, and I am starting work on the Big List page, where you can sort and review data from old tracks. Nice to see some track results popping up on competition sites. If you want any results verified, please feel free to let me know, and I will cross-check them with offline software.

The site has had a considerable reorganisation, to allow the formerly "Beta" engine to become the "Free" engine of the speed reader site. Expect some more reorganisations in the coming weeks.

Apart from the obvious cosmetic differences in the site, you might be interested to hear that the core calculation engine has been tweaked to provide more accurate results for GPX files and to cater for some strange errors that were affecting many submitted files. Please continue to submit GPX files, and please let me know if there are any discrepencies. I continue to work on this part of the site.

The live "Free" site is now with us, and due to a change in the terms of use of the site, all the previously uploaded files have been removed from the site. Thanks very much for all the beta-test files submitted by many many people. If you feel like re-uploading any file, go ahead. The Google Earth overlay links you had previously will still work, but the files are archived.

Finally, the new uploader is available, but you can't yet see the uploaded files (even though the site says that they are available for two weeks!) This is next on my list of things to do. Look for an update in the next few days.

Beta 15 released with GPX support improved somewhat, especially 5x10 and Alpha, though generally all figures should be a bit more accurate. I still wouldn't recommend relying on results generated for GPX files with any competitions. It seems they are prone to all sorts of strangenesses.

Added first cut of support for GPX files. This engine (Beta 14) is faster, and also outputs 100m speeds for my northern friends who requested it. There are also some rudimentary filters that were absent from earlier versions, like a filter to remove points with fewer than 4 sats.

I need some sample Garmin GPX tracks to work with, so please send a few my way. The GPX figures are rough, but within 10% generally speaking. DO NOT RELY ON THEM YET for any competition purposes.

Once the figures are fixed up a bit, I plan to get started on the non-Beta site, but this tool will remain available indefinately (though not always at this URL.)

Google Earth integration was tweaked a bit. Tracks with points at 0,0 will no longer misbehave with Google overlays, but you may need to reprocess your track to get the overlay working again.

Also some changes to the underlying arithmetic in order to make it more accurate. This has improved the accuracy of my total distance calcs to within 1% of Realspeed for most tracks.

I've added Google Earth integration with the site and the ability to download smoothed .kml files of tracks. These will help validate speed figures (a little) as well as providing an interesting insight into the locations that different files submitted here are from. Adding this facility makes the site even more processor-intensive, and I've noticed that a couple of the larger files are timing out on processing. I am working to address this, but thought that on balance it was probably a good thing to add the functionality.

I am still working on fine-tuning the 1-hr speeds, and total distances. In the last few days I've had heaps of positive feedback on the site, and I hope you enjoy this latest addition.

If you want more regular updates on progress, please keep an eye on the GPS and Speed Talk forum at Seabreeze where I post with the handle Dylan72.

Happy Australia Day everyone. I got to take the kids to the movies, I hope you had a good day too, and for all the non-aussie readers, hope you had a great one too, whatever you were doing.

Big news for today is that I have finally added SBP file support (with the new Beta 9 engine) to the site, so you can now submit either SBN or SBP files. Multi-session support is also added. Please help out by submitting some SBP files and giving the system some exercise!

25 Jan 2009

Beta 8 engine deployed. Tightening up of Alpha 500 algorithm to work with Trackpoints for GT-11 devices. Added auto-detection of device by SBN file version, and the site will now output "trackpoints" values for firmwares it recognises as GT-11, and Doppler otherwise.

There is also some under-the-hood work on database connections.

20 Jan 2009
Beta 7 engine deployed. Mostly speed improvements, and engine support for multi-file submissions, and multi-session files (which will be more useful with SBP support - still coming...)
Also added more stuff to the Verbose output, such as the top 5 10sec speeds, and the sailing date and approximate timezone. (The timezone is only approximate, and is designed to allow the engine to determine when to break sessions in a large file.)

8 Jan 2009
Beta 6 engine deployed. Fixes some anomolous Alpha 500 readings. May also affect total distance results.
